Southold Historical Society’s Pine Neck Barn at the Museum Complex at 55200 Main Road, Southold Fundraiser to restore the Boxwood Garden at the Southold Historical Society Museum Complex
On Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, Southold Historical Society will be hosting a Chinese Auction from 10am-3pm at the Pine Neck Barn at the Southold Historical Museum Complex on the Main Road in Southold. Funds raised will support the restoration of the Boxwood Garden. At this time, Cathie Dunn, who is heading this fundraiser, is requesting items for the gift baskets for the fundraiser to be dropped off to the Southold Historical Society Office by April 10.
In May of 1971, the Southold Historical Society received a generous gift from John Norklun, Sr. of Southold as well as other members of his family. The gift was 250 English boxwood plants, which were raised in Southold by the donor’s wife and his mother, Mary Norklun. The memorial garden was planted next to the Thomas Moore House on the museum complex.
On Earth Day, let’s recognize the significance of this lovely garden with participation in the Chinese Auction that will raise funds for its restoration. In order to restore the garden, landscape designer Joyce Grigonis of CADwoman and Peter Castillo of Castillo Scapes are working with the Society to recreate a beautiful garden to serve as a natural centerpiece for the complex and a place to memorialize the original gift by the Norklun family as well as gifts from the community and society members. The gift of bricks that will create the walkway in the garden can be purchased by the community at the Southold Society office or by going to its website, www.southoldhistoricalsociety.org.
Please support the fundraiser NOW by dropping off new items for the auction baskets or donating a completed theme basket. And LATER, on April 22, please participate by joining us at the Pine Neck Barn at the Chinese Auction where an exciting variety of auction items will be offered. Winners need not be present.
