The Ecological Culture Initiative (ECI) is creating a Heritage Garden at St. Joseph’s Villa in Hampton Bays. We plan to cultivate not only a community of plants but of people through providing an opportunity to learn traditional organic gardening as well as ecosystem gardening techniques, habitat restoration and localized food production.

Workshops offered at the Heritage Garden will include but not be limited to:

  • Cultivating Native American, Colonial and ethnic plants for food & medicine
  • Composting / building healthy soils for agriculture, storm-water filtration, and carbon sequestration
  • Rain Harvest / conservation-based irrigation & rain filtration
  • Restoring endangered native biodiversity and developing botanically themed landscapes that contribute to water conservation, fire resistance, erosion control, wildlife habitat, etc.
  • Attracting beneficial wildlife through the use of native plants for pest control
