February 16 / September 3

William Sidney Mount (1807-1868) formed organic and everlasting bridges between his two chief passions in life — art and music. This exhibition sheds new light on the confluence of these creative worlds.
—————————–
Many famous artists integrated art and music in their lives, as Mount did and many others depicted dancers and musicians. However, no one made the connection between these two enterprises as seamlessly as Mount did. Music takes center stage in a wide variety of the artist’s most famous paintings, revealing attention to proper musical posturing and his pursuits as a fiddler, a fife player, a collector of folk songs and a violin designer. His assimilation of these two passions: art and music, prompted his first biographer, Edward Buffet to describe him as “a rustic Leonardo.”

Perfect Harmony: The Musical Life and Art of William Sidney Mount is on display in the Art Museum from February 16 through September 3, 2018. The exhibition is sponsored by Bank of America, Empire National Bank, The Peter & Barbara Ferentinos Family Endowment, New York Community Bank Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and Robert W. Baird Incorporated/Baird Foundation, Inc.
