The Long Island Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate since 2006, will open its doors free of charge to all Museum Day ticketholders on Saturday September 22, 2018 as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 14th annual Museum Day, a national celebration of boundless curiosity in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based museums.
“All of us at the LIM are thrilled to participate in Museum Day. It is a pleasure to open our doors to the broad range of Smithsonian supporters and we are always happy to introduce our wide range of programs and exhibitions to a broader audience,” stated LIM’s Executive Director, Neil Watson.
The theme of this year’s Museum Day is Women Making History, honoring women in society who are trailblazers in the arts, sciences, innovation and culture, and emboldening others to be pioneers as well. To recognize women who have had a significant impact in history, the Long Island Museum will offer a free screening of the Smithsonian Channel™ special The Coronation.
The 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II marked the moment when she was formally recognized as England’s new sovereign in front of God and her subjects. Three hundred million people tuned in, making it the most watched event in history. Now, for the first time, Her Majesty shares memories of the ceremony. Join us as we unlock a thousand years of coronation secrets and provide an unprecedented, up-close look at the legendary Crown Jewels.
Museum Day represents a nationwide commitment to access, equity and inclusion. Over 250,000 people downloaded tickets for last year’s event, and Museum Day 2018 is expected to attract more museumgoers than ever before.
Long Island Museum exhibitions that are on display during Smithsonian Museum Day include Land of Moses: Robert Moses and Modern Long Island; Elias Pelletreau: Long Island Silversmith & Entrepreneur; and Shaping Silver: Contemporary Silversmithing. In addition, visitors may stroll museum grounds and visit the beautiful gardens, the world-renowned Carriage Museum and five historic structures.
Museum Day tickets are available for download at Smithsonian.com/MuseumDay. Visitors who present a Museum Day ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues on September 22, 2018. One ticket is permitted per email address. A list of participating museums, which will be continually updated as more museums continue to register, can be found at Smithsonian.com/MuseumDay/Search.
