The Parrish Art Museum is presenting two unique programs for the community to experience and engage with art and artists. On July 19, The Rolston String Quartet performs a free concert as part of the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival (BCMF) summer series. On July 22, photographer Renate Aller discusses her new book, Mountain Interval, with Museum Director Terrie Sultan, followed by a book signing.

“I look forward to the classical summer tunes in the Parrish galleries to celebrate our continued partnership with the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, and to Renate Aller’s talk about her beautiful new book,” said Corinne Erni, Curator of Special Projects at the Parrish.

The Rolston String Quartet

Thursday, July 19, 5 pm

The Rolston String Quartet—violinists Luri Lee and Emily Kruspe, violist Hezekiah Leung, and cellist Jonathan Lo—will perform a free 45-minute program of repertoire to be announced at the concert. Formed in the summer of 2013 at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity’s Chamber Music Residency, the group earned prizes at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition and the M-Prize competition in 2016, and won First Prize at the 12th Banff International String Competition (BISQC). Immediately following, the Quartet embarked upon the BISQC Winner’s Tour, taking them to Germany, Italy, Austria, Canada, and United States. In 2017, Rolston was the Yale School of Music’s fellowship quartet-in-residence and in 2018 the ensemble won the coveted Cleveland Quartet Award. This season they have performed throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Israel. Highlights include appearances at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Smithsonian Institution) Washington, D.C, Koerner Hall at the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music, and the Esterházy Palace, Eisenstadt, Austria, among other venues.

Conversation and Book Signing: Mountain Interval
Renate Aller and Terrie Sultan

Sunday, July 22, 11 am

German born/New York based contemporary photographer Renate Aller, a Parrish collection artist, spent her childhood vacations visiting, hiking, and photographing the mountains of Austria, Germany, and Italy, beginning a lifelong appreciation of nature and the outdoors. Her most recent project, Mountain Interval, includes images from six continents taken from locations as high as 22,500 feet (adjacent to Mount Everest) to European glaciers and mountain peaks. While the subject matter is monumental, Aller’s photographs engage the viewer through detail revealing the veins and textures of the rocks in their constantly transient state. The images isolate the mountain from its surroundings, presenting the familiar and the known in an intimate way.

Mountain Interval includes 61 images from the Aller’s Mountain Interval portfolio and features an essay by Parrish Art Museum Director Terrie Sultan, who will engage the artist in conversation at the program. Following the talk, Aller will sign copies of the book, which are available for purchase at the Museum shop. Mountain Interval is Aller’s fourth monograph published with Radius Books, following Ocean | Desert, dicotyledon, and the long-term project Oceanscapes.

Her work is in private and public collections including Lannan Foundation, Santa Fe; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT; George Eastman House, Rochester, NY; New Britain Museum of American Art, CT; Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany; Chazen Museum of Art, Madison, WI; and Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, NY.

Inspired by the natural setting and artistic life of Long Island’s East End, the Parrish Art Museum illuminates the creative process and how art and artists transform our experiences and understanding of the world and how we live in it. The Museum fosters connections among individuals, art, and artists through care and interpretation of the collection, presentation of exhibitions, publications, educational initiatives, programs, and artists-in residence. The Parrish is a center for cultural engagement, an inspiration and destination for the region, the nation, and the world.
