SHS: Annual Appeal / 2014

Dear Friend,

“The time has come,” the walrus said, “to talk of many things: Of shoes and ships – and sealing wax – of cabbages and kings”

With a slight bow to Lewis Carroll, we open our annual appeal for your financial support. The Southold Historical Society is both blessed and cursed to be the owner or operator of a number of buildings and structures. You as owners and lessees of property know the daily problems of this ownership. The brutal cost of utilities and services required to maintain our buildings – from extreme winter weather and leaking roofs to insect infestations and equipment failures – is endless.

We represent one of the last bastions that preserves Southold’s heritage. In this day of instant gratification and reaction to technology, we need to have an organization that is a repository for the documents, artifacts and endeavors of the past and present. After all, the present is the history of tomorrow. Many of us are extremely interested in our ancestry, and the society is a vital source for this. Why shouldn’t our descendants have the same interest in us, and why shouldn’t they find the resources to fill in the background of those that preceded them?

Even with careful planning, the unexpected happens, and we need to respond. Whatever happens, we can assure you that your gift will be devoted to the most current society projects.

Please consider giving to this year’s annual appeal.
