Sylvester Manor: ‘Foraging On The Farm’, Wild Weeds Workshop / June 16

A Workshop on Wild Weeds

Saturday, June 16; 3 p.m to 5 p.m

Sylvester Manor Farmstand, 21 Manwaring Road, Shelter Island

Join herbalist Dawn Petter to explore the native plants that grow wild in our area while walking the grounds of Sylvester Manor. Discuss the benefits of backyard ‘weeds’ and how to safely identify and use what is found for homemade remedies. Participants will learn how to better utilize herbs in their daily lives as they touch, see, smell, and taste a variety of plants, and discover creative ways to use them in food and medicine. Dawn will demonstrate several medicinal preparations, including how to make an herbal tincture, an herbal sun oil and a sun tea, plus many others. Everyone will go home with their own herbal tincture and herbal oil made in class and recipe cards for continued experimentation.

Includes a 30-45 minute walk around the farm to study the local medicinal plants and demonstration of how to turn weeds that are gathered into a homemade remedy.

This event is part of the Sylvester Manor Farm Apprentice Education Workshop Series developed to complement the hands-on learning the young farmers receive in the field. It is open to the public and costs $65, which includes materials.

Sylvester Manor Educational Farm: Once a Native American hunting and fishing ground, Sylvester Manor has since 1652 been home to eleven generations of its original European settler family. Over time, the place has been transformed from a slaveholding provisioning plantation to an Enlightenment-era farm, then to a pioneering food industrialist’s estate and today to an organic educational farm responsive to, and supported by, our neighbors and friends worldwide. In light of this history, we envision a farm, a community, and a world where people celebrate food, arts, and inventiveness in the everyday, with a spirit of fairness and joy.
