The Director of the Northport Historical Society (NHS) is a part-time, annual, salaried position administering the NHS Museum & Museum Shop. The Director is expected to work approximately twenty-four hours weekly. Some evening and weekend hours will be necessary to cover board meetings and special events.

Position Summary

The NHS Director reports to and carries out the decisions of the Society’s elected Board of Trustees. As stated in the by-laws: “the Director shall have immediate and responsible charge of the Society’s building, its permanent and other collections and exhibitions and shall supervise and direct the work of the Society and of all employees and volunteers…”. The Director serves ex officio on Board committees and may be assigned other powers and duties as the Board may determine.

General Job Related Activities

  • In addition to managing paid contractors for Web/IT, Bookkeeping, Handyman and Cleaning services, the Director is responsible for oversight, recruitment and retention of part-time day-to-day staff, consultants and volunteers, including:
    • An Education & Outreach Assistant
    • A Membership, Marketing & Events Assistant
    • A Website & Social Media Assistant
    • Collections/Exhibits consultants/volunteers
    • Docents & other program volunteers
  • Point of contact for press, public and grant agencies
  • Representative of NHS at events, conferences and similar museum promotional activities
  • Make preparations for and attend Board of Trustees monthly meetings
  • Ensure payment of NHS obligations, filing of legal documents and maintenance of NHS records
  • General oversight of NHS calendar (exhibits, programs, fundraising events and meetings)
  • Soliciting, preparing and managing government and private grants and donations


  • Bachelor’s degree and four years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination thereof.
  • Computer and social media proficiency (Microsoft Office, Mail-Chimp/Constant Contact e-mail marketing. (Experience with Past Perfect museum contact management database preferred).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill. Ability to build inter-personal relationships and outreach to the greater Northport community and potential supporters and donors.
  • Experience in grant management and reporting

About the Northport Historical Society

The NHS Museum and Shop is located at 215 Main Street in Northport’s landmark Carnegie Library building, open to the public five afternoons a week (Wed–Sun) throughout the year and six days (Tue–Sun) during the summer months. The Museum is a not-for-profit New York State chartered educational institution that serves as a community resource for residents living in the Northport-East Northport School District (Northport, East Northport, Asharoken, Eaton’s Neck, Crab Meadow and Fort Salonga.)

The goal of the Society is to bring residents and visitors closer together by preserving and interpreting our shared heritage. This is done using historic objects, documents, photographs and other materials in (or on loan) to our collection to mount historic exhibits. NHS conducts a series of educational programs for school children and adults, and engages in a variety of other social activities and events that illuminate our shared experience (past and present).
