Hallockville Museum Farm: National Quilting Day, March 17

Celebrate National Quilting Day

at Hallockville Museum Farm
March 17, 2018 | 10:30am to 3pm

On March 17, Hallockville Museum Farm will celebrate National Quilting Day with tours, demonstrations and a special presentation on rural women and their use of textiles. National Quilting Day is observed annually on the 3rd Saturday in March and celebrates this traditional craft and art form along with recognizing quilt makers and the love and skill that goes into the making of each quilt. We hope you will join us on the Farm!

10:30amto 12:30pm: Presentation and Lecture: “Material Remains,” by Hallie Bond
Well into the twentieth century, rural women produced most of the textiles used in their homes. Their quilts and coverlets are now prized by collectors for their looks, but what do they mean? And what about the other textiles: the clothing and underwear, the mittens, socks, hats, sheets, towels, curtains, and rugs? In “Material Remains,” participants will build an understanding about rural women’s lives through their material culture. Northern New York serves as the case study.
Participants will examine and discuss the “material remains” of women’s domestic lives: a quilt, a comforter, a woven coverlet, mittens, fancy work, and a towel. Photographs, paintings, sketches, and the words of contemporary sources will help give context to the objects and give rise to deeper questions. What does the pattern of hand sewing and machine sewing in a quilt suggest about the place quilt-making occupied in a woman’s life?
The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is made possible through the support of the Humanities New York’s Public Scholars program.
Seats are limited for this lecture. Reservations are REQUIRED. Click here to register OR call 631.298.5292.
