Mashomack Book-in-the-Woods – May

The Curious Garden by Peter Brown

Come for a half-mile walk and read a story as you go – a perfect family nature adventure! While out exploring, Liam discovers a hidden garden and decides to take care of it.  Will he be able to transform a gray city into a green world? 


Visitor Center Volunteer Orientation

Saturday, May 5th, 1-2 PM

The Mashomack Visitor Center relies on volunteer to help us staff our information center and small museum.  If you like talking with people and sharing local nature knowledge we could use your help!  Come to this session to find out more, or call 631-749-4219 to talk to Tom Damiani.  Training provided. 


Get in on the Best birding of the Year!

“May–Gration” Bird Walks

Sundays, May 6, 20 and 27, 7-9 AM

Warblers in their colorful breeding plumage, as well as other long distance travelers use Mashomack as a critical resting and refueling stop. These neotropical migrants are in decline. Come see these disappearing birds and learn how you can help stop their demise. On select mornings in May we’ll meet at 7 AM, identify

by sight and by ear and document all the birds which are seen and heard. All birding levels welcome, bring binoculars.


Birds and Breakfast – Rise and Shine!  There are still Overnight Accommodations Available!!

Sunday, May 12, 6-9 AM

Our annual early morning bird watch and breakfast is an eye and ear-opener. We will break into teams, each led by an expert birder, for a friendly competition to identify the most birds.  The morning will culminate over a delicious breakfast in the Manor House. This special event is $35 for guided walk and breakfast. Limited number of Friday night accommodations in the Manor House available for TNC members at $135/person.  Bring binoculars.


Membership Open House & Hauling a Seine

Sunday, May 27, 4-7 PM

Please join us on the lawn of the Bass Creek Cottage at Mashomack with your family, friends and neighbors to celebrate the arrival of another summer. Come learn about our wildlife, nature programs, guided hikes, research projects, and how to become a member. You may also celebrate the East End’s traditional seafaring heritage by helping to pull a 300’ haul seine (fishing net).  Striped bass, bluefish, porgies and several species of crab may be caught. Insect repellant suggested.


Mashomack Book-in-the-Woods – June

Over in the Forest: Come and Take a Peek by Marianne Berkes

Learn the ways of forest animals, count the babies and search for hidden animals. Come and pounce like a fox, leap like a squirrel or scratch like a turkey.


Blue Trail Truck Tour

Saturday, June 9, 6:30-8:30 PM

The 10-mile Blue Trail leads you through an oak forest, meadows and beside vernal and coastal ponds. This far out hike is usually reserved for those hardy enough for a long walk, but this special tour by truck will allow even those with limited stamina to experience the far reaches of the preserve.


Summer Solstice Solitary Stroll – self guided

Thursday,  June 21- trails open dawn to dusk

Greet the dawn of summer with an early morning walk to hear the birdsong, or a late day ramble to enjoy the last light of day. Perfect for photographers looking for great light!


Birding by Ear along the Laspia Family Trail

Saturday , June 23, 8-10 AM

The Laspia Family Trail along the shores of Sanctuary Pond is a hidden and great place to do some birding. Use both your ears and eyes to find and identify birds. Come learn the secrets of remembering the songs and calls of the birds in our area. Bring binoculars.



Summer Environmental Ed

Monday -Thursday, June 25-28  9 AM-2 PM

Hiking, muddling in a marsh, a canoe trip, and creating nature art are all part of Mashomack’s popular summer program. Increasing awareness of the natural world while having fun is the goal! For kids entering grades 3-7 in the fall. $250 per child. Scholarships available.
