SPRING – SUMMER 2018

Dear Friends of Robert Wilson,

Almost three years after its première in Tallinn, Estonia, Adam’s Passion, Bob’s first collaboration with composer Arvo Pärt, can finally be seen again. Next week, the Konzerthaus Berlin will host three performances (March 27-29) and one open rehearsal (March 26). More upcoming tours and revivals can be found in this newsletter (“Other Events”).Pushkin’s Fairy Tales remains a huge success at Moscow’s Theater of Nations. This March 17, they celebrated the 100th performance since its opening in 2015, and sent this humorous backstage video. Congratulations! On April 5, don’t miss The Watermill Center’s Pre-Summer Party @ Spring Place in Manhattan. Featuring installations and performances by Paul Renner, Kembra Pfahler and Kirk Knight, the evening promises to bring the magic of Watermill to the city in honor of The Center’s 25th anniversary.
“THE HAT MAKES THE MAN”: MAX ERNST AND ROBERT WILSON

Bob will honor Max Ernst with an exhibition at the eponymous museum in Brühl (near Cologne, Germany). The museum is closely attached to the house in which Ernst was born. In 1971, French Surrealist Louis Aragon wrote of Bob, about his production The Deafman Glance in a letter to André Breton, “…he is what we, from whom Surrealism was born, dreamed would come after us and go beyond us.” For Bob, the opportunity to design The Hat Makes the Man is “a dream come true.”  Meanwhile, we, the audience, can expect a spectacular homage to the great surrealist artist. May 13 – August 26

OEDIPUS REX IN POMPEII

In 1996, Bob directed a version of Stravinsky’s oratorio Oedipus Rex in Paris. Now, for the first time, he will direct a performance based on the original play by Sophocles. In collaboration with Kinan Azmeh, Dickie Landry, Meg Harper, Michalis Theophanous and many other artists, this promises to be a surprising new take on the classical play. It will first open in the spectacular Teatro Grande Scavi, a large amphitheater in the ancient ruins of Pompeii, and later tour to Vicenza, Naples and other Italian cities. July 5 – 7 in Pompeii

POWER AND BEAUTY: CHINESE SPLENDOR IN MINNEAPOLIS

Earlier this year, the Minneapolis Institute of Art opened an exhibition, designed by Bob, showing various aspects of life at the imperial court during China’s Qing Dynasty. The visitor embarks on a journey of contrasts and counterpoints, experiencing the splendor of royal gatherings, mystic teachings, and the rhythm of nature itself. Power and Beauty in China’s Last Dynasty – on view until May 27
